What is the difference between chemical and physical SPF?Updated 3 months ago

Chemical

Physical
Active Ingredients
  • May include Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Homosalate and Octinoxate (which can lead to coral reef damage)
  • Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide
How it Protects the Skin
  • Absorbs UV rays
  • Ingredients penetrate the top layers of the skin to absorb UV rays before they can damage the skin
  • Reflects UV rays
  • Ingredients form a barrier on the surface of the skin that helps reflect UV rays away from the skin
Primary Benefits
  • Depending on the formulation, chemical sunscreens may be easier to rub into the skin and less likely to leave a white cast
  • Tends to be difficult to fully blend into the skin, leaving a white cast, but is more moisturizing

  • Needs to be applied at least 15-20 mins before sun exposure

  • Can start working immediately after application

  • Offers better water and sweat resistance since it's absorbed into the skin
  • Lasts longer when in direct UV light, but not when swimming or sweating

  • Less product is needed for protection since it is a thinner consistency and spreads more easily
  • Tends to be less irritating and better for sensitive skin since it's not absorbed
